Christmas is Seville’s busiest week of the year
Spring gets the reputation, but the week between Christmas and Three Kings is the single busiest stretch on Seville’s calendar. Spanish families travel, the city fills up, and the monuments hit capacity earlier than at any other point in the year.
Two things make it tighter than a normal high-season week:
- Winter opening hours are shorter. The Alcázar closes at 17:00 from 1 October instead of 19:00, so there are fewer time slots in the day to begin with.
- Several days are closed or cut short. The Cathedral in particular changes its timetable often for liturgical reasons, and December has more of those changes than any other month.
The result is simple arithmetic: fewer slots, more visitors, and a handful of days where nothing is possible at all. The dates either side of a closure are always the first to go.
If your travel dates are fixed, book now. Monument tickets are issued in your name and cannot be changed or transferred. During Christmas week they routinely sell out weeks ahead, and the risk of arriving in Seville with no way to get in is real.
The December calendar: closures and reduced hours
This is the part most guides leave out, because it changes every year and it is not published in one place. These are the dates that matter for December 2026:

Hours confirmed with both monuments for December 2026. The Cathedral changes its timetable more often than any other monument in the city, usually at short notice and for liturgical reasons — we check the real availability for your date before confirming any booking.
Eleven of December’s thirty-one days either have no combined tour or only a reduced window. Three days the Cathedral does not open at all, and for a week in mid-December it closes at 15:00, which rules out afternoon visits entirely.
If you are here in mid-December
Between 9 and 15 December the Cathedral shuts at 15:00, but the Alcázar stays open until 17:00. Afternoons that week are still worth planning around — just build them around the Alcázar rather than trying to fit both monuments in.
What Seville actually looks like at Christmas
This is the part that surprises first-time winter visitors. Seville does Christmas on a scale most people are not expecting.
From the last weekend of November the city is lit end to end — hundreds of streets and squares, with the main run along Avenida de la Constitución, Sierpes, Tetuán and Plaza de San Francisco. The historic centre fills with market stalls, and the city installs fairground rides and attractions in the central squares and along the river side, so the area around Puerta de Jerez and El Prado turns into something closer to a small winter fair than a shopping street.
Alongside that, two traditions worth seeking out:
- The Belén route. Nativity scenes on display in the Ayuntamiento, the Fundación Cajasol, the Palacio de los Marqueses de la Algaba and a long list of churches. They are free, they are genuinely elaborate, and they are what locals actually do in December.
- The Christmas markets. Stalls around the centre selling nativity figures, crafts and food — smaller and more local than the German-style markets, and all the better for it.
The weather in December
Expect 15–17 °C during the day and 5–8 °C at night. December is statistically Seville’s wettest month, but that still means only around five to seven rainy days — most winter days here are clear and bright. Bring layers: it is genuinely warm in the sun at midday and genuinely cold once it goes down, and Seville’s buildings are built to keep heat out rather than in.
Three Kings: 5 and 6 January
If your trip runs into January, these two days change everything.
On the evening of 5 January the Cabalgata de Reyes Magos takes over the city — one of the largest Three Kings parades in Spain, and an overwhelmingly local event rather than a tourist one. Streets close, the centre is packed, and moving around takes far longer than usual.
6 January is a full public holiday. The Alcázar is closed, and most of the city is too. If it falls inside your dates, plan it as a day for walking, eating and the parade’s aftermath, not for monuments.
How to plan it
- Fix your monument dates before anything else. Restaurants and shows can be rearranged; nominative monument tickets cannot.
- Avoid 8, 13 and 25 December for the Cathedral, and 25 December, 1 and 6 January for the Alcázar.
- Book mornings from 9 to 15 December, and the earliest slot available on 24 and 31.
- Do it weeks ahead, not days. This is the point of the whole article.
